It seemed obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things. And the reason they were able to do that was that they’ve had more experiences or they have thought more about their experiences than other people. Unfortunately, that’s too rare a commodity. A lot of people in our industry haven’t had very diverse experiences. So they don’t have enough dots to connect, and they end up with very linear solutions without a broad perspective on the problem. I find this to be true too in Hollywood. So many creative talents flock here, looking to make their mark on the industry, on popular culture, on the world. And so many creative talents are bred here… brought up exposed to the arts. But they’re easily jaded. They never desire to leave LA. They think it’s the center of the universe. They fail to realize that it is not the city that gives birth to creative genius, but creative genius that gathers in the city. Thus, the industry is inevitably, stale, and Hollywood has shattered into a million pieces… scattering in search of a fresh perspective.

In order to be a good documentarian one must:

1. be fluent in English, French, and Spanish {in that order} at the very least

2. be not a “half driver” but a full driver, as in, know how to drive a manual car

3. learn to ride a motorcycle, just in case

4. be a good shot

5. exercise the mind and body with martial arts {which may also come in handy}

6. carry only what you need

7. be a pleasant person. but don’t be shy.

8. *adopt the local practices. this will make people sympathetic to your cause

9. be willing to fight boys {of equal size} without fear

10. collect as many skills as possible

*this one i’ve found to be true

Dark Circles

these dark circles
underneath your eyes
must be God’s curse
for the otherwise
strikingly. beautiful.
or, His most prized,
or perhaps, the wisest of the land,
although inevitably they seem to expand
after one of those good, long, can’t catch your breath cries
on those days when you have a bad case of the “mean reds”
and a sad song stuck in your head
and you keep repeating that last thing he said
just before the part where it
officially ended.

these dark spots
on your chin and cheeks
must be the sun’s little kisses
for the otherwise
strikingly.beautiful.

or perhaps the wisest of the land
although inevitably they seem to expand
after one of those good, long, can’t remember your dream sleeps
on those nights that you end with a midnight snack and a cap
and a classic jazz song stuck on the brain
and you keep repeating that line about the train

must be the best feature
